Endurance - What’s in a Name.
In my short tenure as a small business owner, I’ve concluded that naming a business is a bit like naming a child or a pet. It sounds simple at first, then suddenly, you find yourself mulling over “just the right name” for hours on end.
“That one has too many syllables. Not catchy enough. Too cliche. Reminds me of something that makes me cringe. Reminds me of something I once ate. Reminds me of someone that once ate something. Found one. Nope, already taken by someone else. Back to square one. Try again, Flaig. Palm to face.”
That was the reel inside of my head for a good month, or three, if I’m being completely honest. I wanted something that would feel relevant to a broad group of people. Something that was easy to remember and hard to forget. Pragmatic, yet hopeful. That’s a lot of pressure for only having 26 letters to re-arrange at my leisure! My thinking time could have been halved with a 52 letter alphabet. Or maybe not.
“Keep it simple. Simple is your motto and the world has so much complicated already. This is an enduring process,” I thought to myself.
Enduring. There was something about the word enduring. If you endure something, it lasts. I liked it, but I had to run it by my friend, Thesaurus, to ensure that it’s accomplices (aka synonyms) matched the criteria as listed in my head. “Abide, bear, stand, suffer, tolerate.” It was a little low on the spectrum of hope. Close, but not quite right. My next google search was “Endura.” Nope, that definitely wasn’t the right word.
“Hmmm. What about Endurance?”
I re-consulted with my very exhausted friend, Webster , once again. “Patience, persistence, tenacity, determination, grit.” That was more like it. A word that had the power to paint a more hopeful picture. Then, it really hit home: life requires endurance. It sure does. Over and over again. If you are alive, you automatically qualify for internal storage space deemed “endurance.” If only we could apply for a line of credit every now and again.
Whether learning a new skill, trying to conquer an old skill, trying to build for a new skill, or simply living minute-by-minute in order to survive day-by-day. Life. Requires. Endurance. One word, that not only has the ability to connect the turns in life, but also, the ability to connect all of us that get to live it. And that, is a beautiful thing.
